The Aussie sets a smashing new course record at the Wanaka Challenge in New Zealand.
In the first major triathlon race in 2009, McDonald came out of the water at 7. After a great start he got hammered from both sides at the same time and took a throat full of lake Wanaka. So he hit dry land with 2:30 min down.
He pulled over his CEP running O2 compression socks and from then on Chris just went for it. After only 30 km he managed to take the lead. As a tactical treat McDonald eased off and let his training buddy Justin Daerr come up to him and work together to try to break to race up. Thankfully the plan worked out: They rolled together until the 150km mark, then Chris did pull away slowly over the next 30km and came back to transition area 2 with a 2:30 buffer on Justin.
The CEP-“Sockrunner” managed to hold the lead on the following 42km easily and came down the finish line in 8:37:41 to break the old course record by 10 min and set a great run time of 2:51.
Congratualions Chris! 2009 can go on like this!!
