BOULDER. CO (courtesy of medi.de)- Announced today, Matt Reed, USA, was named USAT’s Male Athlete of the Year for 2008 Elite ITU. Reed fought long and hard last season to save the USA's third Olympic spot and allow the USA, the country where triathlon originated, 3 men to start the 2008 Olympic Games. Reed also earned the highest finish ever for an American Male at a World Championship, with his 5th place finish at 2008 World Championships.

"This is a huge honor and I am thrilled to receive this award. Last year was a year of super highs and low lows, and this award helps me swallow my sub-par performance at my first Olympic games and know that my week in, week out performances were appreciated," Reed said from his home in Boulder, Colorado.

"I am very proud to race for the USA and very proud of the team that I have. We have an amazing system of support here and I am honored to be a part of USA Triathlon. This honor only motivates me more to get the stars and stripes to the top of the podium again."

Reed recorded an amazing season of finishes in addition to his win at the Olympic Trials and his 5th at World Championships. A few more 2008 season highlights include defense of the St. Anthony's Triathlon and Boulder Peak titles, a win at Miami International and Bermuda Triathlon, and winning the 2008 USA National Championship. He also had a 2nd place at Richard's Bay World Cup, a 10th at Madrid World Cup, 4th at Chicago Triathlon (4 days after the Olympic Games) and 5th at Lifetime Minnesota.

Reed is proud of his amazing group of sponsors, an integral part of TEAM REED. Please check out mattyreed.com for information on his sponsors, his 2009 race schedule and to contact Matty Reed.
